What is a computer?

  • An electronic device for storing and processing data, typically in binary form, according to instructions given to it in a variable program
  • A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information, or data. It has the ability to store, retrieve, and process data
  • A computer is a device that accepts information (in the form of digitalized data) and manipulates it for some result based on a program or sequence of instructions on how the data is to be processed.

What is data?

  • Facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis
  • A collection of facts, such as numbers, words, measurements, observations or even just descriptions of things
  • Data can be qualitative (describing something e.g. he has a long hair) or qualitative (numbers e.g. he has 2 legs)

Computer Components

Computer components are the electrical hardware that join together to make up the complete computer system. The common computer  hardware are motherboard, CPU, RAM, BIOS-ROM and Hard disk. These are described based on the basic operation of a computer for converting raw input data into information for various uses.

  1. Take input - The process of entering data and instructions into the computer system
  2. Store data  - Saving data and instructions so that they are available for processing as and when required
  3. Process data - Performing arithmetic, and logical operations on data in order to convert them into useful information
  4. Output information - The process of producing useful information or results for the user, such as a printed report or visual display

Input unit of a computer system

This unit contains devices with the help of which we enter data into computer. This unit makes link between user and computer. The input devices translate the information into the form understandable by computer.

Central processing unit (CPU)

CPU is considered as the brain of the computer. CPU performs all types of data processing operations. It stores data, intermediate results and instructions(program). It controls the operation of all parts of computer

CPU itself has following three components

ALU(Arithmetic Logic Unit)

Memory Unit

Control Unit

Output Unit
